BARBAAR
A performance inspired by music of Heldom and Danheim, choreographer Dries Verstreepen translates the music into dynamic scenes, fluent, rough movements, and beautiful images.

BARBAAR is a dynamic contemporary dance piece that delves into the rich and complex tapestry of what it means to be a "barbarian." This performance reinterprets the ancient and modern connotations of the term, exploring the dualities of civilization and wilderness, sophistication and rawness, integration and alienation.

Through a series of evocative movements and powerful choreography, the dancers embody the spirit of various so-called barbarian tribes, from the fierce Visigoths and Ostrogoths to the nomadic Huns and the enigmatic Vandals.
The piece compares the untamed energy and strength of these groups with the structured elegance of Roman civilization, highlighting both the conflicts and the cultural fusion that arose from their interactions.
THE BIGGER PROJECT
BARBAAR is the first performance of a new project aimed at supporting the amateur dance community in Belgium. The project is being launched with the goal of providing a platform for the many talented amateur dancers in Belgium to participate in a professional production.
A selection of dancers from the amateur field, hailing from various municipalities and provinces across Belgium, will have the opportunity to collaborate on the creation of the first performance, BARBAAR, under the direction of Dries Verstreepen.
This performance marks the initial phase of a larger supra-local project.
In collaboration with local cultural centers, academies, and dance schools in various provinces, this production will tour the entire country. In each region, there will be a partnership with local amateur dancers, allowing the cast to change or expand for each performance. This gives amateur dancers the chance to experience the dynamics of a professional production. With this project, we aim to spotlight amateur dance talent and inspire young dancers by giving them the opportunity to shine in a professional dance production.
SUPPORT US
This project can offer enormous opportunities for the amateur dance community in Belgium, but it is only just getting started.
To realize this project, we primarily need a budget for transportation costs, rental of rehearsal spaces, and theater rental to get our beautiful project off the ground.
Once we have started, the remaining budget will be immensely helpful in covering the high costs of promotional materials, purchase of costumes and stage design, montage days in theaters for programmers, and more.
